185 Years of Animal Rescue in Scotland

Founded in 1839, the Scottish SPCA has been protecting animals for more than 185 years. This nationwide charity works 365 days a year to rescue, rehome and rehabilitate animals, raise standards and drive positive change. The only UK charity with legal powers to investigate and report animal cruelty directly to the crown office, tackling abuse at its source.

They respond to tens of thousands of calls every year, rescuing abandoned pets, treating sick or injured wildlife, and investigating cruelty cases. With nearly two centuries of experience, they are leading the way in animal welfare in Scotland, working tirelessly to give animals the lives they deserve.

What the Scottish SPCA Does

The Scottish SPCA’s work is broad and far-reaching, ensuring that every animal, no matter their species or story, receives the care and protection they deserve:

• Rescue & Protect – From domestic abuse cases and serious animal crime to injured wildlife, they rescue, rehabilitate, and either rehome animals or provide lifelong sanctuary care.
• Wildlife Rehabilitation – Their National Wildlife Rescue Centre treats thousands of sick, injured, and orphaned wild animals each year before releasing them back into the wild.
• Pet Aid – Offering Pet Aid Food Banks, Veterinary Clinics, and Behavioural Support to help keep pets and owners together.
• Education & Prevention – Teaching compassion and animal welfare across Scotland. Including their ground-breaking Animal Guardian Programme.
• Community Advice Hubs – Providing local support and practical advice for pet owners.
• Advocacy & Campaigning – Championing animal welfare reforms, providing expert advice and recommendations and setting high standards for animal protection.
• Conservation & Habitat Restoration – Supporting the maintenance and recovery of Scotland’s habitats for future generations of wildlife.

The Scottish SPCA’s 2024 results offer an incredible snapshot of just how far their work reaches:

• 16,687 owners kept together with their pets thanks to Pet Aid support
• 489 animals treated through Pet Aid Veterinary Services
• 102 young people became Animal Guardians through their education programme
• 269,652 calls answered by the Animal Helpline team
• 37,214 animals rescued and given a second chance
• 2,562 animals successfully released back into the wild

These numbers show the difference the Scottish SPCA makes every single day, but there is still more to do.
