Bani is a young Asian elephant rescued by Wildlife SOS after a train collision at around nine months old. She arrived at the Elephant Hosptial Campus unable to stand and with limited movement in her hind legs; after months of specialist care and physiotherapy, she’s slowly gaining confidence and mobility and can now stand and walk for short periods each day.
Buddies For Paws proudly supports her ongoing rehabilitation and care through Wildlife SOS.

Bani officially joined the Buddies for Paws guardian family in 2025. She lives at the Elephant Hospital Campus in Mathura, India where a dedicated team of veterinarians and caregivers support her recovery every day.

When she was rescued, Bani couldn’t stand or walk without support. Thanks to daily physiotherapy, laser therapy, and Ayurvedic oil massages, she can now stand and take short walks independently, a significant milestone in her recovery.

Bani loves mud baths, rolling, splashing, and coating herself from trunk to tail. She has also learned how to sneak bananas and sugarcane from her caregivers when they’re not looking.

To build strength safely, Bani practices walking in a hydrotherapy pool. The buoyancy of the water supports her hind legs and helps with balance and movement. All of this is slowly helping build Bani’s confidence.

Bani uses special protective boots when she walks, helping reduce injury when she drags her hind feet. Always playful, she has turned them into a game. The moment a boot is strapped on, she kicks it off and waits for a caregiver to put it back on again. This mischievous routine keeps her active and entertained, and lets her carers know she’s full of energy and on the right path to recovery.

Bani is getting ready for her second Christmas at the Wildlife SOS sanctuary. As soon as she sees her caregivers dressed as Santa she knows she is in for lots of treats. Her confidence and strength is building day by day and she cant wait to see what surprises they have for her.
